The UAE has introduced a new federal traffic law that brings driverless vehicles closer to becoming a reality. Passed by the UAE cabinet on June 10, this legislation expands vehicle classification rules to accommodate cutting-edge technologies, including self-driving and electric cars.

This law is part of a broader effort to align the UAE with global transport trends. Dubai, in particular, has ambitious plans for autonomous and futuristic transport, aiming for a quarter of its public transport to be self-driving by 2030. Additionally, the city is exploring the potential for flying taxis, positioning itself as a leader in innovative transport solutions.

The UAE's commitment to embracing autonomous vehicles is reflected in its impressive ranking on the global stage. In 2020, the country was ranked 8th in KPMG’s Autonomous Vehicles Readiness Index, underscoring its preparedness for integrating these advanced technologies into its transport infrastructure.

Currently, the deployment of self-driving cars is limited, with only a few models offering eyes-off-the-road driving capabilities. Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot system stands out as the sole system that does not require the driver to be behind the wheel.

Last year marked a milestone for the UAE in the autonomous vehicle sector, as it issued its first national license for self-driving vehicles to the Chinese company WeRide. This move highlights the country's proactive approach in fostering partnerships and advancing the adoption of autonomous vehicle technologies.
