The ministry plans to focus on afforestation efforts, with implementation to begin in Luxor by the end of 2024.
The Ministry of Local Development announced plans to plant 22 million trees by the end of 2027 through incremental annual targets as part of the presidential ‘100 Million Trees’ initiative. The project aims to increase funding for environmental initiatives by 60% to expand urban green spaces, improve air quality, and mitigate climate change.
The ministry plans to focus on afforestation and the development of parks by prepping executive plans across governorates. Implementation will begin in Luxor by the end of 2024. These efforts also include the conversion of public transport buses to run on electricity to reduce emissions. The ministry has introduced 110 electric buses in Cairo and Alexandria, and converted 377 buses to natural gas.
