Youssef Alimam Brings Folk Mythology Into Electronica on 'El Nadaha'
A solid debut for Alimam, ‘El Nadah’ showcases his ability to reinterpret cultural stories in a more contemporary context.
Youssef Alimam, an Egyptian multidisciplinary artist, has recently unveiled a compelling new EP, ‘El Nadaha’. This project presents a blend of Egyptian folklore and electronica, offering an immersive soundscape rooted in the mythical stories of rural Egypt.
Known as a creature with mystical powers, El Nadaha is a legendary figure in Egyptian mythology who summons individuals near bodies of water late at night, creating an aura of mystery and intrigue. Alimam reimagines this folklore through synth-heavy, multi-layered soundscapes complemented by carefully selected folk samples.
The EP, spanning just over 13 minutes across three tracks - ‘El Nadaha’, ‘El Mal7’ and ‘El Baraka’ - carries a cohesive narrative, each track flowing into the next. These titles echo familiar concepts within Egyptian mythology, drawing upon ancient rituals meant to ward off evil or invite good fortune. Alimam’s approach uses vocal samples and textured electronic arrangements to evoke a sense of continuity between past and present.
While ‘El Nadaha’ stands out for its creative concept of folklore and electronica, the production sometimes feels a bit generic. However, Alimam’s adept use of vocal samples enriches the overall atmosphere, lending the tracks a familiar yet fresh feel. Despite some limitations in the mixing, ‘El Nadaha’ is a solid debut for Alimam, showcasing his ability to reinterpret cultural stories in a more contemporary context.
