This Cloud Kitchen is Bringing Mexican Spice to Mediterranean Classics
Opening its doors in September 2024, Sueñito serves up the sort of comfort dishes usually followed by a food coma.
For Egyptians living abroad, a longing for home is inevitable, no matter how much they deny it. But when a flight to Cairo isn’t an option, where does one turn? If you ask Omar Badawy, founder of New Cairo’s latest cloud kitchen, Sueñito, he’d say Mexico comes pretty close.
Opening its metaphorical doors in September 2024, Sueñito is a Mexican-Egyptian-Mediterranean fusion cloud kitchen, bringing the best of two—or rather, three—worlds under one umbrella. From ground beef taquitos and ‘Asal & Tahina’ churros to chicken gyro bowls, Sueñito caters to all cravings, with a dash of Mexican spice on top.
But how did the idea for Sueñito come to be? It’s a simple story. When Sueñito’s founder, Omar Badawy, was living in the U.S., he spent weekends in Mexico and quickly noticed striking cultural parallels with Egypt.
“I started noticing so many cultural similarities, especially with food,” Badawy tells SceneEats. “I saw a skewer and immediately thought of kofta skewers back home in Egypt. The only difference was that theirs was wrapped in a tortilla.” The idea sparked—why not bring these flavours back home? And that’s exactly what he did.
Operating as a cloud kitchen in New Cairo with delivery through their website, Sueñito—Spanish for ‘midday nap,’ another cultural connection—offers the kind of comfort food that makes you crave a “sueñito.” So, the next time you find yourself in New Cairo on an empty stomach, consider trying Sueñito’s truffle ‘shrooms quesadilla.
