As the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan persists into its 19th month, Egypt has accepted the largest number of Sudanese refugees, according to a report released by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Over 1.2 million people from Sudan “sought international protection” in Egypt since April 2023.

The UNHCR report highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, as well as the overstretched capacity of Egypt’s support systems. The report also spotlight the urgent need for durable solutions, including resettlement programs. These pathways would offer refugees the chance to rebuild with access to education, employment and a stable future. With the Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan 2024 only 56.3% funded, the remaining gap underscores the pressing need for international contributions.
