State Commissioners Authority Recommends Banning of ‘The Atheist’ Film
The controversial film tells the story of Yahia, the son of an extremist Sheikh, who questions his faith.
The State Commissioners Authority has issued a report recommending the cancellation of the licence for the screening of ‘Al-Mulhid’ (‘The Atheist’) in all theatres.
The Administrative Court at the State Council has now received the report, which is expected to guide the court’s final ruling on the matter. The report suggests revoking the film's licence and prohibiting its screening in all cinemas across Egypt and abroad, as well as on any digital platforms. The decision was based on claims that the film contains content that insults Islam.
Written by Ibrahim Eissa and directed by Mohamed El-Adl, ‘Al-Mulhid’ follows the story of Yahia, the son of an extremist Sheikh, who begins to question his faith.
