On the 122nd anniversary of the Egyptian Museum, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a new project in collaboration with Meta that will help visitors bring ancient Egyptian artefacts back to life - through the power of augmented reality (AR)!

The initiative, ‘Project Revival’, allows visitors to interact with ancient Egyptian artefacts through AR, digitally reconstructing key pieces to reveal them in their original forms and colours through Instagram filters. The experience is available at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

The project is part of a broader effort by Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism to modernise the museum experience and attract younger, tech-savvy audiences. Visitors can use their smartphones to see artefacts in augmented reality, including statues of Queen Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun, and the deities Amun and Mut. In addition to offering a more immersive way to engage with Egypt’s cultural heritage, the AR filters also allow users to share their experiences on Instagram, giving the project global reach.

“Projects like this are essential to deepening visitors’ understanding of our rich cultural legacy, merging the past with the future to create a unique experience,” Dr. Amr Talaat, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said.

The project marks a growing trend of cultural institutions leveraging new technologies to engage visitors and enhance the tourism experience. Meta’s involvement, through its AR tools, underscores the potential of social media platforms to bring history into the digital age. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities plans to expand the project to include more artefacts and interactive features in the future, aiming to position Egypt as a leader in the heritage and tech sphere.
