Cabinet Committee Legalizes 293 Unlicensed Churches & Buildings
The Egyptian government has legalized 293 unpermitted Christian churches and service buildings, raising the total to 3,453 since 2016.
In a recent cabinet meeting, the Egyptian government approved the legalization of 293 Christian churches and service buildings that were operating without proper permits. This decision raises the total number of churches and related structures legalized since 2016 to 3,453.
The move aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to ensure freedom of worship. In 2016, legislation was enacted to facilitate the construction and renovation of churches. Following this, a committee was established in 2017, led by the prime minister, to review requests for legalizing unpermitted places of worship. This committee comprises 10 members, including representatives from various Christian sects and relevant government bodies.
