The Best Rural Tourism Villages initiative, launched by the UNWTO in 2021, honours rural communities that exemplify sustainable tourism practices, cultural preservation and community development. This year, 260 villages from around the world competed for the award, with only 55 making the final list.

The village offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Nubian life, preserving the region’s history and customs. Its colourful houses and art-lined streets make it a picturesque destination, while the village’s commitment to maintaining its cultural identity provides an enriching experience for tourists.
Abu Ghosoun, situated near the Hankorab Nature Reserve along the southern Red Sea, emphasises environmental sustainability, offering visitors meaningful cultural experiences while promoting the conservation of its natural surroundings. The residents of Abu Ghosoun have worked to integrate sustainable practices into their way of life, ensuring that the area's natural beauty is preserved for future generations.
Adel El-Gendy, Director General of Strategic Management at Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, accepted the awards on behalf of the two villages. He emphasised the government’s commitment to rural tourism, particularly through efforts to upgrade infrastructure, train local residents, and organise workshops on sustainable tourism practices.
