Months after the release of his collaborative album ‘Shoot the Engine’ with Carl Grai, Abdullah Miniawy unveils his new solo effort ‘Nigma Enigma’. The Egyptian expressionist, multi-instrumentalist, writer, and singer presents a complex body of work that reflects his ongoing artistic evolution.

On ‘Nigma Enigma’, released via Hundebiss Records, Miniawy delves into spiritual questioning, exploring themes of core beliefs and divine connection. From the moment the album’s title catches our attention, the intro ‘Heaven for non-believers’ draws us into a hypnotic and disquieting atmosphere with Abdullah’s haunting vocalizations as he wrestles with faith.

Abdullah is a proficient vocalist with a distinct singing style, but what truly adds to his performance on this album, beyond his remarkable vocal control, is his creative use of recording techniques that allow his voice to occupy more space within the sonic landscape. His voice is integrated with the musical elements in a juxtaposition that adds nuance, creating an immersive experience that evokes a profound and sometimes unsettling feeling, as exemplified in ‘Farada’, where he offers a performance reminiscent of a contemplative prayer.

The album features instrumental tracks that play a crucial role in guiding Abdullah’s thematic thread and the overall auditory experience. ‘The Marble Feet’ stands out amongst these, unfolding through a low, fluctuating bass hum that unfolds in a nonlinear progression throughout the track. It recedes and returns like a chant, setting a somber tone that carries through to the following track, ‘Fall down wiseman’, where Abdullah sings with heavy emotion.

In ‘Lord of the Whip’, Miniawy delivers an extended spoken word monologue that is both hauntingly poetic. The subtlety of the composition enhances the disquieting atmosphere, as Abdullah’s voice breaks through the soundscape with a direct and raw intensity. His exceptional ability to convey complex emotions and internal struggles is a central highlight of this album. Through his voice, Abdullah translates his innermost thoughts and reflections, inviting listeners into a space where his artistry and imagination unfold.

‘Nigma Enigma’ is a conceptually rich work that showcases the artist’s exploration of spiritual and existential themes, underpinned by an experimental approach and intricate songwriting. The album thoughtfully examines faith, memory, and freedom, all framed within a well-crafted narrative that ensures a cohesive and immersive sonic experience.
