The Egyptian Space Agency is spearheading several ambitious projects designed to tackle climate change and solidify Africa's presence in space exploration. The centerpiece of this initiative is the launch of the African Development Satellite (AfDevSat) by the end of 2024.
The project is a collaborative venture between Egypt, Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. Each nation has contributed expertise in designing a specific subsystem for the AfDevSat, with Egypt leading the project by overseeing design, assembly, integration, testing and launch. The Egyptian Space Agency has also hosted training programs for the other countries involved.
Beyond AfDevSat, Egypt is collaborating with its African partners on another groundbreaking project: the installation of a remote sensing camera on the International Space Station (ISS). Backed by the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs and Airbus, this initiative will see the camera designed, assembled, and tested entirely in Egypt before its deployment on the ISS.
Adding to this momentum is the upcoming launch of the SPINX satellite, funded by the Academy of Scientific Research. Scheduled for lift-off by the end of the year, SPINX will join AfDevSat to study climate change and its impact on the continent.
