Grand Egyptian Museum is First Green Museum in Africa & Middle East
The museum’s 34% water saving is equivalent to 63.4 million litres of Nile River water annually.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has recognised the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) as the first ‘EDGE Advanced’ Green Museum in Africa and the Middle East.
One of only a handful of recipients worldwide, the GEM’s innovative, resource-efficient construction and climate-smart design allows the building to save more than 60% in energy costs and reduce water use by 34%, compared to a conventional building of its type and size. These are significant savings for a building that spans over half a million square metres.
The museum's reflective roof and external shading, as well as low-energy lighting and the installation of smart metres, all contribute to the GEM’s world-class climate-friendly design. The 34% water savings alone are equivalent to 63.4 million litres of Nile River water annually.
