Renowned Egyptian cardiac surgeon, Dr. Magdi Yacoub, has announced plans for a new hospital near the Great Pyramids of Giza dedicated to treating heart patients. The centre will be committed to delivering free or low-cost treatment to help support a more equitable health care system.

The announcement was made at the World Population Conference, where Dr. Yacoub further emphasised the urgent need to tackle extreme poverty and inequities in access to healthcare, a disparity that was starkly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out that 2.5 million children die each year due to a lack of healthcare.

Dr. Yacoub called for unified efforts to ensure that every child receives the healthcare they need, asserting that providing equitable health services is a collective responsibility. He also highlighted the Heart Center in Aswan’s significant achievements in scientific research and increasing heart surgeries. The centre not only performs operations but also offers comprehensive follow-up care for patients.
