Bashteel Railway Station has been inaugurated in Giza, set to serve as the Cairo rail nexus to Upper Egypt. The new station hopes to remove pressure from Cairo’s central Ramses Station, as well as ease traffic congestion in Ramses Square.

Described as the “Gateway to Upper Egypt” the new station has the capacity to accommodate around 250,000 travellers daily, and covers an area of around 57 acres. The smart station features electronic ticketing machines, Wifi services, and is fully air conditioned. Since its inception in 2020, the project has produced around 7,500 new job opportunities. The station’s design is inspired by Pharaonic monuments, with obelisks situated in the station’s atrium, beneath a 40 metre tall glass pyramid.

During the inauguration, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi revealed that the state has invested around EGP 2 trillion in enhancing the country’s transport infrastructure over the past years. The President further remarked that the state has put priority on developing the transportation sector in spite of developments being needed in other sectors, as previous administrations had preferred to focus on keeping the economy stable and had neglected the upkeep of transportation infrastructure.
