AED 30 Billion Rainwater Drainage Network to Be Built in Dubai
Once completed, the system will have the capability to collect over 20 million cubic metres of water per day.
The emirate of Dubai has greenlit the 'Tasreef' project, an initiative to develop an extensive rainwater drainage network with an investment of AED 30 billion (USD 8.2 billion). The project is poised to be the largest rainwater collection system in the region, enhancing Dubai’s infrastructure to meet future climate challenges.
The 'Tasreef' network will boost Dubai’s rainwater drainage capacity by an estimated 700%. Once completed, the system will be able to collect over 20 million cubic metres of water per day, ensuring the emirate's needs are met for the next century. This project will comprehensively cover all areas of Dubai, absorbing substantially more rainfall than the current infrastructure can handle.
Work on the 'Tasreef' project will commence immediately, with various stages expected to conclude by 2033. The initiative is designed to preserve Dubai’s infrastructure and urban achievements while significantly enhancing the safety and security of all residents.
Dubai Municipality is tasked with the implementation of the project, adhering to the highest global technical and engineering standards. A key feature of the project is the use of state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), the largest in the Middle East. These machines are renowned for their efficiency, speed, and precision in excavation.
