Zagazig University Installs Blind Walkers to Enhance Accessibility
The move makes Zagazig University the first public university in Egypt to implement facilities for the visually impaired.
In a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility for visually impaired individuals, Zagazig University has installed blind walkers across its campus. This marks a significant milestone as the first public university in Egypt to implement such facilities under the ‘Towards Inclusive Egyptian Universities’ project.
The initiative is part of efforts by the Ataa Charitable Investment Fund to support individuals with disabilities, focusing on creating an inclusive environment in higher education institutions.
Practical workshops have been conducted for faculty members, university staff and students with visual impairments to familiarize them with the use of the blind walkers. These workshops are crucial in ensuring that the walkers are effectively utilized and integrated into the daily lives of students who require them.
The Ataa Fund aims to replicate this successful model in collaboration with other universities across Egypt. The initiative includes applying engineering standards for accessibility, such as ramps and supports, at universities like Zagazig, Menoufia, and Ain Shams. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to empower students with disabilities by providing them with necessary support and conducive learning environments.
