Kom Ombo Solar Project Wins 'Energy Transition Deal of the Year'
The 200 megawatt power plant represents a key milestone in the development of renewable energy in Egypt.
Aswan’s Kom Ombo solar power project has won the IJ Global ‘Energy Transition Deal of the Year’ award, in recognition of its transformative effect on the local electricity sector, as well as its position as a key milestone in the development of renewable energy resources in Egypt.
The project invited USD 114 million in investment from a broad range of sources, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which has played a key role in several sustainability projects in Egypt since 2012.
Constructed by Saudi firm ACWA Power, the Kom Ombo site is the largest private solar power plant in Egypt, generating 200 megawatts. The site represents a significant step towards the government’s target of generating 42% of electricity from renewable resources by 2035, and the larger National Climate Change Strategy 2050.
