Egypt’s Court of Cassation has removed retired professional footballer Mohamed Abou Treika from a terror list, alongside 120 other individuals who were previously on the list. Amongst those removed are the sons of late Islamic preacher Yusuf Al Qaradawi, and former Cairo University Political Sciences professor Pakinam El Sharqawi. These cases have been referred to another criminal court circuit.
In 2017, Abou Treika was added to the list along with 1,528 other individuals. In July 2018 the Court of Cassation overturned the decision, before a criminal court ordered the reinstatement of the names for a period of five years. This decision was upheld by the Court of Cassation.
In 2023, lawyers for the defendants filed a fresh appeal with the Court of Cassation against the five-year ruling. The ruling for this appeal took place on May 18th, 2024.
