Driver Accused in Habiba El Shamaa Case Receives 15-Year Sentence

The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced the Uber driver accused of attempting to abduct Habiba El Shamaa, also known as the 'Shorouk Girl', to 15 years in prison and a fine of EGP 50,000. His driver's license has been revoked, and the civil lawsuit has been referred to the appropriate court.

The case caused outrage in Egypt after El Shamaa jumped from a moving vehicle, fearing a kidnapping attempt. Habiba El Shamaa sustained fatal injuries after jumping from the car on Suez Road, leading to her death on March 14th.

The driver is charged with forgery of official documents and driving under the influence of narcotics. Investigations have uncovered a history of drug use by the driver, and there are suspicions that the perfume he claimed to have sprayed may have been intoxicating.
