British Steel Contracted to Supply Tracks for Rail Project in Egypt
The new project will connect the Red Sea with the Mediterranean, creating a 600 km freight and passenger route.
British Steel has secured a multimillion-pound contract to supply railway tracks for a major new infrastructure project in Egypt, which will link the Red Sea with the Mediterranean. The planned route stretches 660 kilometres, connecting the same vital bodies of water as the Suez Canal, further bolstering Egypt’s capacity for welcoming international trade.
The new project will serve as both a freight line as well as a high-speed passenger route, with trains reaching speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour.
The UK company has been contracted to supply 9,500 tonnes of steel tracks for the transformational new project, which will connect Egypt’s northern coast on the Mediterranean with its Eastern Red Sea shoreline, locations that are in high demand for global trade as well as tourism. The first shipment of steel rails will be delivered to Alexandria later this month, with a second instalment due in June.
