Abu Dhabi Aerospace Company to Begin Near-Space Flights in UAE
Targeting operational readiness by 2025, this new technology will enhance real-time mapping and data accuracy.
Abu Dhabi-based Mira Aerospace is poised to revolutionize data capture and communications with the upcoming launch of its High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), targeting operational readiness by 2025. This innovative platform, designed to ascend to altitudes of 18 kilometers, occupies a unique near-space zone where conventional commercial aircraft and satellites do not operate, establishing Mira as a pioneer in this strategic aerial domain.
The HAPS technology, powered by solar energy, offers unprecedented operational capabilities, maintaining its position for months without disruption from weather disturbances below. Unlike drones, which are limited by flight duration, and satellites that require precise orbits for data capture, HAPS provides consistent connectivity and can support a range of Earth-observation payloads, including optical, thermal, and synthetic-aperture radar.
The implications of this technology are vast, impacting sectors such as urban planning, emergency response, and transportation. The HAPS will enhance real-time mapping and data accuracy, facilitating advancements in autonomous driving and other data-dependent applications. The efficiency and low emissions associated with solar-powered HAPS further underscore its potential as a sustainable option in aerial operations.
Having conducted several successful test flights across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the UAE, Mira Aerospace is currently developing its Earth-observation and telecommunications payload for its inaugural flight.
