$8 Billion First Phase of Makkah Metro Project Planning Restarts
After being plagued by delays since 2010, the expansion of Makkah’s public transportation network is set to resume.
Feasibility studies for the USD 8 billion first phase of the four-line Makkah Metro have restarted, 14 years after the project’s initial studies began in 2010. The first phase is intended to connect the centre of Makkah to large multi level parking facilities to the West and the South, further reinforcing transportation options in the city. When completed, the new Makkah Metro will add to the existing Al Mashaer Al Mugaddassah Metro line, which began operating in 2010, connecting Makkah, Arafat, Muzdalifa, and Mina.
Construction on the full four-line Makkah Metro system was scheduled to begin in 2015, but the issuance of contracts has been plagued by delays. However, the project seems set to resume, with French engineering firm Systra updating feasibility plans for the first phase in preparation for construction, supported by UK-based company Ernst & Young and law firm Watson Farley & Williams.
Following the completion of Line A, three further lines are also slated for construction. Line B will provide a direct link between Makkah and Mina, unlike the stopping service provided by the Al Mashaer Al Mugaddassah light rail. Line C will consist of a Northern loop connecting western Makkah to Mina, whilst Line D will circle the city.
