New UAE Law Will Permit Abortions in Cases of Rape & Incest
The law will apply to residents who have been in the UAE for at least a year.
The UAE has approved legislation permitting abortions in cases where pregnancies result from rape or incest. This decision represents a pivotal step forward in UAE's abortion laws, aimed at safeguarding the health and rights of women across the Emirates. Under the new legislation, abortions can be performed if the pregnancy is the result of non-consensual intercourse or involves a close family member as the perpetrator. The case of rape or incest must be promptly reported and substantiated by an official report from the Public Prosecution. The procedure is strictly regulated: abortions can only be performed if the foetus is less than 120 days old, and without posing significant medical risks to the woman’s life. The law applies to residents who have been in the UAE for at least a year. This reform aims to fill a critical gap in the legal framework, providing essential protection for women, children and families affected by these crimes.
