Egyptian, US & Israeli Officials Meet on Rafah Border Crisis in Cairo
The Rafah crossing has been shut since Israel deployed ground troops to Rafah city on May 7th.
Egyptian, American and Israeli officials are set to meet in Cairo on June 2nd to discuss the reopening of the Rafah border crossing. The three countries will also discuss how to secure the Egypt-Gaza border.
This meeting is part of Egypt's efforts to ensure the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the crossing. The Egyptian government has held Israel accountable for the closure's repercussions, which have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Despite Israeli reports claiming Egypt closed the crossing, Cairo has consistently denied these allegations.
The Rafah crossing has been shut since Israel intensified its operations in Gaza, deploying ground troops to invade Rafah city on May 7th. After condemning Israeli takeover of the Palestinian side of the crossing, Egypt has refused to collaborate with Israel on aid delivery through Rafah. Earlier this week, Egyptian aid trucks entered Gaza via Israel's Karm Abu Salem crossing following an agreement between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and US President Joe Biden.
