Jeddah’s historic old town, also known as Al Balad, welcomed 2.5 million visitors within its ancient winding streets over the course of Ramadan, with many flocking to the area to enjoy the post-Iftar, pre-Suhoor nights with friends and family. With shops dotted throughout the gently lit alleyways, the fully pedestrianised area is a haven for those escaping the city’s often car-centric culture.

The historic district is currently undergoing a comprehensive revitalisation programme, establishing itself as a hub for business as well as cultural initiatives. As part of this programme, Al Balad has recruited over 800 staff to keep the area tidy, as well as crowd organisers and security to ensure visitors get the most out of their stay. An expanding schedule of cultural events, including concerts and workshops, as well as art installations, further added to the area’s appeal, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
