Athr Gallery Shows Leading Saudi Artists at London’s Frieze Art Fair
The artworks, created by Saudi artists like Nasser Al-Salem and Sara Abdu, explore themes of identity and modernity.
Athr Gallery, with branches in Jeddah, AlUla and Riyadh, is presenting Saudi artworks at Frieze London from October 9th to the 13th. This year’s exhibition, titled ‘Nafs’ - which translates to “self” or “psyche” in Arabic - features notable Saudi artists including Nasser Al-Salem, Dana Awartani, Sara Abdu and Ayman Daydban.
Nasser Al-Salem merges his background in architecture and calligraphy to create minimalist sculptures with a modern interpretation of Arabic calligraphy. Dana Awartani presents sculptures from her ‘Platonic Solids Duals’ series, with an emphasis on spirituality and geometry.
Ayman Daydban, meanwhile, turns the concept of a soccer field into 15 paintings arranged by a child to challenge perceptions of boundaries. Sara Abdu’s ‘I Loved You Once’ series, created with human hair, explores themes of memory, identity and reflection.
