Sayyida Zeinab Mosque in Historic Cairo Inaugurated After Renovation
The presidential visit marks the completion of the work on the mosque, as part of a project to rejuvenate Historic Cairo.
The Sayyida Zeinab Mosque in Historic Cairo has just been inaugurated, marking the completion of a restoration project that has been ongoing since 2022. Almost all of the mosque had already been reopened to the public in March 2024 after temporary closure.
The renovation of the mosque is part of a government project to restore Historic Cairo through work on the mausoleums of the Prophet Muhammad’s family (Ahl Al-Bayt) and the surrounding area. The renovators made sure to preserve the Islamic ornamentation on the interior marble structure, which is unique to the Sayyida Zeinab Mosque, while restoring the external façade, interior shrines, and halls. They also added new decorative inscriptions in the Islamic style.
The Sayyida Zeinab Mosque is the third to be renovated through this scheme; the Al-Hussein and Al-Sayyida Nafisa mosques have also been restored since 2022.
