9 Dams & Canals Planned for Construction in the UAE
Nine new water canals, spanning about nine kilometres, will also be built to manage rainfall runoff in residential areas.
The President's Initiatives Committee has greenlit the construction of nine new dams, the expansion of two existing ones, and the development of embankment barriers. These projects aim to increase water reserves by capturing rainwater and floodwaters, with a total storage capacity of up to 8 million cubic metres.
In addition, nine new water canals, spanning about nine kilometres, will be built to manage rainfall runoff in residential areas. The initiative will target 13 locations, including Shis and Khor Fakkan in Sharjah, Masfout in Ajman, and several areas in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.
With an expected completion time frame of 19 months, these efforts represent a significant move towards achieving the Water Security Strategy 2036 and fortifying the UAE's resilience against climate change.
