Grand Mosque in Makkah Fitted With 25,000 New Carpets for Ramadan

These carpets cover much of the mosque’s huge 350,000 square metres of floor space.

The Grand Mosque in Makkah has been fitted with 25,000 new carpets for the Ramadan season, as the pilgrimage site sees a significant increase in those performing Umrah and attending prayer. The amount of visitors to the Masjid Al Haram is also likely to increase due to the number of worshippers who will gather at the mosque every evening to perform taraweeh prayers.

Providing and maintaining carpets for the site is a herculean task, with the sprawling complex spread over more than 350,000 square metres; these new carpets cover a significant portion of this floor space. As footfall increases during the holy month, cleaning procedures at the mosque are also a high priority. Floors and other surfaces are washed and disinfected 10 times a day by a team of over 4,000 employees.
