Born Michel Demitri Shalhoub on April 10, 1932, in Alexandria, Egypt, Omar Sharif was a true Egyptian - and later international - cinematic legend. Known for his striking performances in international films, Sharif's journey to stardom began in Egyptian cinema. His breakout role in ‘The Blazing Sun’ (1954) introduced him to audiences, and his marriage to famed actress Faten Hamamah further cemented his place in Egyptian film history.

Sharif's global fame skyrocketed with his role as Sherif Ali in ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962), earning him an Academy Award nomination. His portrayal of the title character in ‘Doctor Zhivago’ (1965) brought him further acclaim, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Over a career spanning five decades and more than 100 films, Sharif demonstrated versatility, whether in romantic leads or historical dramas, with the latter producing iconic looks now forever preserved in history.
