Telecom Egypt Signs Agreement to Increase Internet Speed

The agreement will help boost Egypt’s internet infrastructure and decrease dependence on servers abroad.

Cairo Scene

Telecom Egypt, the country’s main internet operator, has signed an agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to boost technological infrastructure and increase internet speeds across the nation.

The plan will see ICANN install and operate the Managed Root Server (IMRS) in Telecom Egypt’s regional data hub. Installing the IMRS in Cairo will help enhance internet speed and flexibility across the country, and Africa as a whole, by enabling the response to DNS queries locally instead of abroad.

According to Telecom Egypt, decreasing the dependency on servers and networks abroad will also reduce the risk of cyberattacks.

Telecom Egypt has been increasing its efforts in developing Egypt’s internet infrastructure. In 2023, the company signed agreements to connect Egypt and Africa with the European Medusa Submarine Cable System and land the 2Africa subsea internet cable, the world’s longest undersea communications cable, which is connected to 33 countries.
