Jeddah Hosts Inaugural Meeting of Middle East Green Initiative
The inaugural meeting aims to plant 50 billion trees across the region, representing 5% of the global reforestation target.
The first meeting of the Ministerial Council for the Middle East Green Initiative will soon be hosted in Jeddah on October 16th.
Chaired by Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, Saudi Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, this gathering seeks to implement the foundational phase of the Middle East Green Initiative, which aims to plant 50 billion trees across the region, representing 5% of the global reforestation target.
The initiative also aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 670 million tons. This commitment is expected to improve air quality, prevent soil erosion, and provide essential habitats for wildlife.
Initially launched in Riyadh in October 2021, the initiative gained momentum during the Middle East Green Initiative Summit in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022, when Saudi Arabia pledged financial support and announced that the General Secretariat would be established in Riyadh, covering operational costs for the next decade.
