Zawya Cinema Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Special Programme

Rising from the remnants of Cinema Odeon a decade ago, Zawya has firmly etched its presence into Cairo's cultural landscape.

Zawya Cinema, an independent movie theatre in Downtown Cairo, celebrates its 10-year anniversary with a special programme.

Officially opening its doors on March 12th, 2014, a crowd of film enthusiasts gathered at the back entrance of Cairo's Cinema Odeon. They were drawn by a neon sign, bearing the name Zawya - a name relatively unknown to the cinema scene before then - and made their way into the 175-seat hall for an inaugural screening. A decade later, Zawya has become a significant part of Cairo's cinematic and cultural landscape.

Over the next ten years, Zawya has hosted 10 editions of the Panorama of the European Film, curated 160 film programs, showcased 2,000 films, released 150 titles, welcomed 500,000 moviegoers, and established a new cinema space. Despite facing challenges such as structural issues, the impact of COVID-19, financial pressures, and logistical hurdles, the cinema has endured.

Starting this March, audiences are invited to join in for a series of special film programs and events celebrating Zawya's journey. Updates on film selections and events will be unveiled throughout the month on Zawya’s socials and website.
