Saudia to Buy 50 Electric Jets From German Air Taxi Company
The new jets can take off, hover, and land vertically like helicopters, but are much quieter and more eco-friendly.
Saudia Aviation Group recently signed a binding agreement to purchase fifty electrical vertical take-off and landing jets (eVTOL jets) from German air taxi developer, Lilium, in an effort to enhance the Kingdom’s aviation and tourism sectors. The agreement also includes a clause stating an option to buy fifty more eVTOL jets from Lilium. It is the largest reported firm order of eVTOL aircraft by an airline, and Saudia Group will be the first company in the region to acquire this particular type of all-electric aircraft.
The first jets are expected to arrive in 2026, and operations will be managed by Saudia Private, a subsidiary of the Saudi aviation conglomerate.
With the capacity for cabins for up to six passengers and their luggage, the eVTOL jet is a new design with the ability to take off, hover, and land vertically, much like a traditional helicopter. However, the jets are powered by electrical propulsion systems, and are thus much quieter and more eco-friendly than helicopters.
The new jets are expected to increase flight frequencies, decrease traffic congestion, and therefore increase the efficiency of air travel within the Kingdom. The partnership also aims to enhance national connectivity between major cities, reducing travel time by up to 90%. Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimages will also be supported by these new additions.
The Middle East is a priority sector for Lilium, and the recent agreement brings the German company’s order total to 106 firm orders and 76 options, consisting of over 600 aircraft. They are in discussions with other global airlines looking to reduce carbon emissions and transition to electrical air travel.
