Over 500,000 Sudanese Refugees Have Entered Egypt Since April 2023
The government’s latest numbers come 11 months into the Sudanese civil war.
The Sudanese civil war has caused one of the world’s most severe displacement crises. According to a Human Rights Watch report released on January 31st, more than 10.7 million people have been uprooted from their homes, giving Sudan the highest rate of internal displacement in the world.
According to the Egyptian government’s latest figures, more than 500,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed into Egypt since the war began in April 2023. This makes them the nationality with the largest population among Egypt’s 9 million international migrants.
Most of these refugees (89%) are coming from Khartoum, which has seen heavy fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. More than half of the refugees are women.
The response to the Sudanese migration crisis has been met with a UN cash flow crisis, as the UNHCR has reported only receiving 6% of the USD 54.7 million it requires to support those who have fled Sudan.
