Local Farmer Creates Organic Fertiliser From Earthworm Waste

Local farmer Mohammed Al-Shaer has already shared his findings at Khayrat Al-Baha Festival.

In Al-Dhafir village in Al Baha, local farmer Mohammed Al-Shaer has created a holistic system to yield fertilisers for his crops using earthworm manure.

Al-Shaer began with 2,000 worms in a single five-metre-long, 60-cm-high tank. The worms fed on dry leaves, organic waste and food scraps, and after four months, they yielded nearly 300 kg of nutrient-rich compost. In the process, their population increased tenfold.

The compost is then added to the soil of crops, where it is able to speed up plant growth, increase fruit production and overall enhance soil health. After reaping the fruits of his experiment, Al-Shaer intends to share his findings with other farmers across the kingdom, having already done so at Khayrat Al-Baha Festival.
