'On Top of the Pyramid: Exhibition of the Civilization of Ancient Egypt', a temporary exhibition that is running at Shanghai Museum in China until August 17th, 2025, drew 12,000 visitors on its first day on July 19th, attracting over 250,000 tickets in the meanwhile.

The exhibition is considered a landmark showcase in China since, despite not being the first exhibition dedicated to ancient Egypt in the country, it is the largest of its kind since 2003; over 95% of the artefacts at the exhibit are appearing in China for the first time. The exhibit features 787 artefacts from seven Egyptian museums, including a massive statue of Akhenaten, a human-shaped sarcophagus from the Saqqara Ole site, and the treasures of ancient kings like Tutankhamun, Amenemhat III and Ramses II.

'On Top of the Pyramid' is split into three halls: 'The Era of Tutankhamun', 'The Land of the Pharaohs' and 'Secrets of Saqqara'. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities brought artefacts discovered by the Egyptian mission in Saqqara, the oldest and largest necropolis in Egypt, such as coloured coffins, coloured limestone statues from the Old Kingdom and mummified animals. An immersive display titled ‘Disappearing Pharaoh Khufu’  will allow visitors to participate in a 45-minute virtual experience that uses state-of-the-art virtual reality technology to teach them about Egyptian society 4,500 years ago.
