Egyptian Cotton Exports Soar by 36.5% in 2023
India was the top importer of Egyptian cotton, receiving 715 thousand metric quintals, accounting for 48.9% of the exports.
In 2023, Egypt's cotton exports surged by 36.5%, reaching 1.5 million metric quintals compared to 1.1 million metric quintals in 2022, as per data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
India emerged as the top importer of Egyptian cotton, receiving 715 thousand metric quintals, accounting for 48.9% of the total exports for the previous year. However, despite the rise in exports, total cotton production decreased from 3.3 million metric quintals in 2022 to 2.5 million metric quintals in 2023, marking a decline of 24.5%.
This shift was attributed to a significant decrease in domestic consumption, which stood at 54.3 thousand metric quintals in 2023, decreasing by 63.5% compared to the previous year due to increased export activities. The substantial increase in Egypt's cotton exports in 2023, alongside the notable decline in domestic consumption, reflects a shift in the country's cotton market dynamics.
