The 8th edition of Zawya’s short film festival will run from March 20th to April 7th.

Zawya’s short film festival, Zawya Shorts, is about to begin, and its lineup of films has just been released. From March 20th to April 7th, the Cairo-based independent theatre will be playing 31 short films in the 8th edition of its annual film festival.

The Zawya Short Film Festival is an opportunity for filmmakers to show their work, compete for prizes, and share their expertise in filmmaking through moderated discussions. Last year’s awarded films include ‘Simo’ made by Aziz Zoromba, ‘Sahbetty’ by Kawthar Younis, ‘The Ditch’ by Amr Abed, ‘Kenopsi’ by Mohamed Omar, and ‘The Push’ by Ahmed Farrag.

This year’s film festival comes as Zawya Theater celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the decade, the theatre has screened over 1,500 films and organised more than 300 events. To celebrate this milestone, the theatre is introducing an out-of-competition category of showings featuring a selection of films that have won the festival’s awards in previous years.

Zawya’s mission is to encourage and support young Egyptian and Arab filmmakers. Zawya Shorts is one of two annual festivals held by the theatre to support this goal. Zawya Shorts is sponsored by Misr International Films, Red Star, Lagoonie Film Production, Film Clinic, and Dashur Workshops.
